Trying to plan outfits for a family session can spiral fast! One minute you’re picking a color you love, the next you’re juggling tones, textures, and patterns until you’re deep in screenshot purgatory, wondering if blush and rust actually go together. Answer: only sometimes.
It’s easy to overthink it, especially when you want everyone to look great together without looking like a wedding party or a walking Pinterest board.
That’s where monochromatic palettes come in. They simplify the process while keeping things elevated, modern, and polished. This beautiful family leaned into shades of blue, and the results were timeless, cohesive, and full of personality, without an ounce of “matchy-matchy” energy!
This family session is such a great example of exactly how to style a family for photos without going full matchy-matchy. Claire, Leslie, and their adorable boys showed up in head-to-toe shades of blue that felt unified but never uniform. From soft chambray to rich navy, every piece played its part: textured, layered, and completely photogenic.
It’s all about variation within a single color family. Think of it like composing a melody: different notes, same key.
Mixing light and dark tones, adding subtle patterns (such as stripes or knits), and playing with textures (like linen, denim, or cotton) keeps things visually interesting without clashing or competing. It works beautifully for groups of all sizes and ages, especially when dressing little ones who don’t love wardrobe changes or stiff fabrics.
Blues, in particular, are camera-friendly and flattering in every season. Plus, they photograph beautifully against both urban backdrops and natural scenery, such as the Eiffel Tower and views of the Seine.
Style tip: Choose one anchor color and let each family member interpret it their own way. A dress here, a button-down there, maybe a romper or some sneakers for the kiddos. Keep it loose and let personality guide the details.

We met near the Trocadéro at sunrise, the perfect backdrop for letting real life unfold. And that’s exactly what this session was about: real life. Not stiff poses or forced grins, but genuine connection, joyful chaos, and a bit of beautiful unpredictability.
Instead of pushing for perfect photos, we focused on making the experience itself enjoyable. I watched for cues, followed the kids’ lead, and made space for their feelings: wiggles, squeals, and snuggles.
And that made all the difference! Ollie went from shy to silly, Noah soaked in the snuggles, and Claire and Leslie got to relax into the moment, knowing they were in good hands.
Claire and Leslie have made a tradition of booking photoshoots while traveling, but this was their first as a family of four. Between jet lag and toddler energy, we focused on connection over perfection. And it worked. Claire later shared: “You were so good with the kids! Thank you for helping us create such wonderful memories of Paris!”
Whether it’s your first trip to the city or your fifth, the most important thing is to show up as yourselves. Outfits that feel comfortable, kids being kids, and a photographer who’s ready to roll with the unpredictability.
You don’t need a fashion spreadsheet or runway-ready looks to get photos you love. You just need a little intention, a good dose of playfulness, and maybe a color story that pulls everything together.
